Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Flydubai Captain Smit Machchhar to light a ceremonial torch during Israel’s next Independence Day celebrations. Netanyahu extended the invitation during a conversation with Modi, highlighting the close relationship between India and Israel.
The invitation follows an incident involving Captain Machchhar on a Dubai-to-Tel Aviv flight, where he was reportedly attacked by his co-pilot inside the cockpit. Despite being injured, the Indian pilot managed to open the cockpit door, allowing others to intervene. His actions were praised by Netanyahu, who recognised his courage during the incident.
Netanyahu described the proposed torch-lighting invitation as a special honour, noting that the ceremony traditionally recognises individuals for their contributions to society. The final selection of torch-lighters follows an official process, so the invitation does not itself confirm their participation.
The development highlights the longstanding ties between India and Israel and recognises the Indian pilot’s actions during a serious in-flight emergency.
