Amaravati, June 22, 2026: Andhra Pradesh IT and Education Minister Nara Lokesh has claimed that more than 8 lakh students have moved from private and aided schools to government schools in recent years, reflecting growing confidence in the state’s public education system.
According to the minister, several reforms introduced in the education sector have helped improve the quality of government schools across Andhra Pradesh.
Nadu-Nedu Transformed School Infrastructure
One of the biggest initiatives was the Nadu-Nedu programme, under which thousands of government schools received upgraded classrooms, modern furniture, digital learning facilities, drinking water systems, clean toilets, compound walls, and improved infrastructure.
The programme covered schools across urban and rural areas, aiming to create a better learning environment for students.
English Medium Education Attracted Parents
The introduction of English-medium instruction in government schools also played a major role in increasing admissions. Many parents who previously preferred private schools began enrolling their children in government schools to access English education without high tuition fees.
Welfare Schemes Boosted Enrollment
Student welfare programmes further strengthened the public education system.
Schemes such as Jagananna Gorumudda provided nutritious mid-day meals, while support for uniforms, textbooks, notebooks, and other educational materials reduced the financial burden on families.
Digital Learning and Smart Classrooms
The government also introduced digital learning tools and smart classroom facilities in many schools. Officials say these initiatives improved student engagement and helped bring government schools closer to private school standards.
Government Schools See Rising Admissions
Education department data over the past few years showed a steady rise in admissions to government schools. The increase was particularly visible in rural areas where upgraded facilities and welfare measures encouraged parents to shift their children from private institutions. The minister said the movement of more than 8 lakh students highlights the success of reforms aimed at strengthening public education.
Focus on Learning Outcomes
While enrollment numbers have increased, education experts stress that learning outcomes and academic performance will remain important measures of success.
The government has stated that it will continue investing in infrastructure, teacher training, technology, and student welfare to further improve educational standards across Andhra Pradesh.
