Srisailam Dam Enters World Book of Records

Srisailam Dam has achieved a major milestone by securing a place in the World Book of Records. The dam has been recognised for its massive crest gates and its ability to continue operating during periods of exceptionally heavy flood flows.

Located across the Krishna River, Srisailam Dam is an important water infrastructure project serving Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. It plays a key role in water storage, irrigation, hydropower generation and flood management in the region.

One of the notable features highlighted in the recognition is the dam’s large crest gates, each measuring 60 feet by 55 feet, according to the details shared. These gates help regulate the movement of water through the structure and are important during periods of high inflow.

The dam has also been recognised for continuing operations during flood flows exceeding 25 lakh cusecs. Such large flows highlight the importance of strong infrastructure, careful monitoring and coordinated water management during the monsoon season.

Srisailam reservoir has a reported storage capacity of 215.8 thousand million cubic feet (TMC). This capacity makes it an important part of the Krishna River water system, supporting irrigation and other water requirements across the region.

Beyond water storage, the project contributes to electricity generation through hydropower. Its role in managing river flows and supporting agricultural needs makes it a significant asset for the two Telugu states.

The recognition brings attention to the engineering scale of the project and its importance to regional water management. However, dam safety and flood management also depend on regular maintenance, monitoring and careful coordination between the authorities responsible for reservoir operations.

Srisailam Dam’s reported entry into the World Book of Records marks a notable moment for one of South India’s major river projects. Official details about the record category and recognition would provide further clarity on the specific achievement.
