Bhagat Singh-Like Photo in Punjab Voter List Sparks Controversy

A photograph resembling legendary freedom fighter Bhagat Singh appearing beside a voter’s name in Punjab’s electoral roll has sparked a political controversy. The incident occurred in the Ludhiana East Assembly constituency, raising questions about the accuracy of voter records and the verification process.

Congress leader Amarinder Singh Raja Warring highlighted the issue on social media and questioned how such a photograph could appear in an official voter list. The incident drew attention because electoral rolls are important records used to identify eligible voters and support the conduct of elections.

The Ludhiana district administration later clarified that the photograph had been carried forward from an earlier electoral roll into the draft list published on August 13, 2026. Officials said the discrepancy was identified during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) verification process and had since been corrected.

According to the administration, the final electoral roll containing the corrected photograph was scheduled for publication on October 12, 2026. The correction is intended to address the specific discrepancy identified in the draft list.

The incident has renewed debate over the need for accurate voter records and careful verification of electoral data. While the Congress leader questioned the error, election officials maintained that the issue had been identified and corrected during the revision process.

Electoral roll verification plays an important role in maintaining reliable voter records. Errors involving photographs or personal details can create confusion and undermine public confidence if they are not addressed promptly. The incident highlights the importance of reviewing draft electoral rolls and reporting discrepancies to the relevant authorities.

The administration’s clarification addresses the specific photograph error, but the episode has brought renewed attention to the processes used to prepare and verify electoral rolls in Punjab.
