A 35-year-old Dalit man, identified as Manoj Gautam, was allegedly beaten to death in front of his wife and minor daughters in Uttar Pradesh’s Sitapur district on October 15. The incident took place in the evening when Manoj was returning from the market and was reportedly surrounded by a group of men near National Highway 30. According to the available details, the attackers allegedly assaulted him with sticks while his wife and children begged them to stop. Manoj was rushed to a nearby health centre, where he was declared dead on arrival. His family was left devastated as they stood beside his body on the roadside. The incident has raised serious concerns about violence against Dalits and the safety of vulnerable communities.
Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against six suspects in connection with the killing. Four suspects have reportedly been detained as the investigation continues. Initial reports suggest that an old rivalry may have played a role in the attack. However, possible caste-related tensions have also been raised, and the exact motive remains to be established through the police investigation. Authorities will need to examine the circumstances surrounding the assault and determine the role of each suspect.
The incident has also drawn attention to the trauma faced by Manoj’s wife and young daughters, who reportedly witnessed the fatal attack. Activists have called for a fair investigation, strict action against those responsible and justice for the victim’s family. They have also demanded that the relevant provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act be applied if the investigation establishes that the crime involved caste-based abuse or violence. The case highlights the need for a thorough investigation and support for the family as they deal with the loss. Further details about the motive, the suspects and possible charges are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.
