Several Indian Holidays in 2027 Fall on Weekends, Leaving Fewer Long Breaks

Several public holidays in India in 2027 are expected to fall on weekends, raising concerns among employees who follow a Monday-to-Friday work schedule. A list circulating online highlights dates such as Maha Shivratri on March 6, Labour Day on May 1, Independence Day on August 15 and Christmas on December 25.

According to the list, Maha Shivratri and Labour Day fall on Saturdays, while Independence Day falls on a Sunday. Christmas also falls on a Saturday. These dates could mean fewer extended breaks for employees who do not normally work weekends.

Unlike some countries that shift certain public holidays when they fall on weekends, India generally does not automatically move central government holidays to the following weekday. The Department of Personnel and Training issues holiday guidelines for central government offices, while state governments and individual employers may follow different arrangements.

The dates have sparked reactions on social media. Some traders and workers expressed disappointment over the possibility of fewer long breaks, while some business founders welcomed the prospect of uninterrupted work schedules and regular business activity.

Some people have also called for changes to holiday policies, pointing to practices in countries such as Japan, where substitute holidays may apply under certain circumstances.

However, the actual number of holidays and long weekends employees receive in 2027 will depend on the official holiday calendar applicable to their state, workplace and employment rules.
