Modi Urges G7 Leaders to Protect Seafarers After Deaths of Indian Sailors

Évian-les-Bains, France, June 17, 2026:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on world leaders to ensure the safety of seafarers and protect global maritime routes while addressing the G7 Summit in France, following the deaths of Indian sailors during recent tensions in West Asia.

Speaking during a session on international partnerships and global solidarity, Modi emphasized that the security of seafarers is a shared global responsibility and stressed the importance of keeping vital shipping corridors safe amid ongoing geopolitical conflicts.

Modi Highlights Risks to Global Maritime Trade

Addressing G7 leaders, the Prime Minister noted that disruptions in key maritime routes can have serious consequences for global trade, energy supplies, and economic stability.

He pointed to recent tensions in West Asia and their impact on international shipping, particularly in and around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy transit corridors.

According to Modi, maritime security is essential for maintaining global economic stability and ensuring uninterrupted trade flows.

Tribute to Indian Sailors

The Prime Minister referred to the deaths of Indian sailors reportedly killed during a recent incident involving the merchant vessel MT Settebello.

The deceased sailors were identified as:

  • Aditya Sharma
  • Shivanand Chaurasiya
  • Patnala Suresh

Modi expressed concern over the loss of Indian lives and emphasized the need for greater international cooperation to safeguard civilian maritime personnel operating in conflict-prone regions.

Seafarers’ Safety a Global Responsibility

During his address, Modi stated that sailors play a crucial role in connecting nations through global trade and supply chains.

He urged the international community to ensure that seafarers can perform their duties without fear and that commercial shipping routes remain secure during periods of geopolitical tension.

Experts note that a significant portion of global oil and energy shipments passes through the Strait of Hormuz, making maritime stability a critical international concern.

India Calls for Dialogue and Stability

The Prime Minister reiterated India’s long-standing position that international disputes should be resolved through dialogue, diplomacy, and cooperation.

He stressed that peace and stability are essential not only for regional security but also for protecting global trade networks and civilian lives.

Focus on Maritime Security

The issue of maritime security has gained increasing attention at international forums due to ongoing geopolitical tensions and their impact on global supply chains.

India, one of the world’s leading maritime nations, continues to advocate for secure sea lanes, freedom of navigation, and stronger international cooperation to protect seafarers and global commerce.
