Thiruvananthapuram: The Museum Police have registered another FIR in connection with the recent clashes at the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, taking the total number of cases linked to the violence to three within a week.
Police registered the latest case based on a complaint filed by UDF councillors over the incidents that took place during Monday’s council meeting. Palayam councillor Sherly S filed the complaint, and several UDF women councillors supported it.
According to the FIR, four BJP councillors have been named as accused. They are Chempazhanthy Udayan, Giri V, Vayalakkara Ratheesh, and Pappanamcode Saji. Police booked them under Sections 126(2) (wrongful restraint), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), and 3(5) (joint criminal liability) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The complaint alleges that the confrontation started after Chempazhanthy Udayan snatched the attendance register from Congress councillors. The UDF claimed that BJP councillors created the disruption to stop members from signing the attendance register. According to the UDF, the move aimed to protect BJP councillor Sugathan, who is currently in jail in a KAAPA case. Under council rules, repeated absence from meetings can lead to disqualification.
The FIR states that the accused stopped UDF councillors, including women members, from signing the attendance register. It also alleges that Chempazhanthy Udayan slapped Sherly S, UDF councillor Anitha S, and other councillors. The complaint further claims that the other accused also assaulted UDF members, causing injuries that required medical treatment.
This is the third FIR linked to the recent unrest inside the Corporation office. Earlier, police registered two separate cases after clashes between BJP and LDF councillors. One case named Mayor V V Rajesh, Deputy Mayor Ashanath, and other BJP councillors based on a complaint from LDF members. Another case named five LDF councillors following a complaint filed by BJP councillors.
Meanwhile, Chenkottukonam councillor Archana Manikandan has also filed a complaint against UDF councillors. Police said they have not yet recorded her statement because she is undergoing treatment in hospital. Officials said they will register another case after recording her statement.
