Guwahati, June 15, 2026 — Terminal 2 of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport has secured a place on a prestigious global list of the world’s most beautiful airports, bringing international recognition to Assam’s architectural heritage and design excellence.

The recognition highlights the airport’s unique blend of sustainability, local craftsmanship, and cultural identity.

Guwahati Airport Beautiful Airport List Recognition

The newly developed terminal draws inspiration from Assam’s iconic kopou phool (foxtail orchid), the state’s official flower.

Architects incorporated 57 tree-like columns and layered roof structures inspired by flower petals to create a distinctive visual identity.

Moreover, the design aims to connect travelers with the natural beauty and cultural traditions of Northeast India.

Bamboo at the Heart of the Design

A key feature of the terminal is the extensive use of bamboo.

The project incorporates nearly 140 metric tonnes of locally sourced bamboo, showcasing traditional craftsmanship while promoting sustainable construction practices.

Furthermore, the bamboo elements create a warm and welcoming environment throughout the terminal.

Celebrating Assam’s Identity

The Guwahati Airport Beautiful Airport List recognition has been welcomed across Assam.

Supporters say the terminal successfully reflects the region’s culture, biodiversity, and architectural traditions.

Officials also view the achievement as an opportunity to showcase Northeast India’s heritage to millions of domestic and international travelers.

Sustainability Meets Modern Infrastructure

Designed by architect Nuru Karim, Terminal 2 combines modern airport infrastructure with environmentally conscious principles.

The biophilic design emphasizes natural materials, open spaces, and energy-efficient features.

As a result, the terminal offers passengers a unique travel experience while maintaining a strong connection to local identity.

Global Recognition for Indian Airports

The inclusion of Guwahati Airport on the global list places it alongside several internationally acclaimed airport terminals.

The recognition also highlights India’s growing focus on combining world-class infrastructure with regional culture and sustainable design.

For Assam, the achievement marks another milestone in promoting the state’s tourism, culture, and modern development on the global stage.
