India Post Reinvents Delivery with 24-Hour Speed Post

In a major move to compete with private courier giants, the India Post under the Department of Posts has launched 24-hour and 48-hour guaranteed Speed Post services across key metro cities in India.

The new premium service aims to provide time-bound delivery for urgent consignments, marking a significant transformation in India’s traditional postal system.

Cities Covered Under 24-Hour Delivery

The guaranteed delivery service currently connects six major metropolitan hubs:

  • Mumbai
  • Hyderabad
  • Bengaluru
  • New Delhi
  • Chennai
  • Kolkata

The service will initially be available in selected PIN codes, with a gradual expansion planned across more locations.

How India Post Achieved 24-Hour Delivery

The biggest breakthrough behind this fast delivery system is secured cargo space on passenger flights.

Instead of relying on leftover cargo capacity, India Post now uses “hard-blocked” cargo space, ensuring mail is not delayed due to capacity shortages.

Officials confirmed partnerships with multiple airlines to guarantee:

  • Dedicated cargo slots
  • Backup flight options (redundancy system)
  • Same-day dispatch reliability

This strategic upgrade has eliminated a major bottleneck in postal logistics.

Advanced Delivery System & Tracking

To ensure timely delivery, India Post has implemented:

  • Dual delivery shifts (morning & evening)
  • Real-time tracking for parcels
  • OTP-based delivery confirmation
  • Aadhaar-based verification

These features bring India Post closer to modern logistics standards followed by private players.

Pricing of Speed Post 24 Service

The pricing remains competitive:

  • ₹94 to ₹186 (depending on weight & distance)
  • Additional GST applicable

This makes it an affordable alternative to private courier services offering similar timelines.

Boosting India’s E-Commerce Ecosystem

Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia highlighted that the initiative is designed to strengthen India Post’s role in the booming e-commerce sector.

Currently, parcels contribute only 5% of India Post’s business, but the segment is growing rapidly at 44% year-on-year.

The government aims to position India Post as a major logistics partner for companies like:

  • Amazon
  • Flipkart
  • Shiprocket

A Big Step Toward Postal Modernization

With guaranteed delivery timelines, improved logistics, and digital tracking, India Post is taking a strong step toward modernizing India’s postal ecosystem.

The introduction of 24-hour Speed Post could reshape the logistics market, offering a reliable and cost-effective alternative to private courier services.
