India Rafale Tech Transfer Deal Gains Momentum Ahead of Modi’s France Visit

By South Matters Defence Desk

New Delhi, June 11: The India Rafale Tech Transfer Deal has gained fresh momentum ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to France, with diplomatic sources indicating that Paris is prepared to offer significant technology transfer for India’s proposed acquisition of 114 Rafale fighter jets.

The development could mark one of the most important defence collaborations between India and France. Furthermore, the proposed deal is expected to strengthen India’s domestic aerospace manufacturing capabilities while addressing critical requirements of the Indian Air Force.

Reports suggest the deal could be valued at nearly $40 billion, making it one of India’s largest defence procurement programs.

India Rafale Tech Transfer Deal Includes Key Technologies

According to diplomatic sources, the India Rafale Tech Transfer Deal may include technology transfer for aircraft airframes, Safran engines, and Thales avionics systems.

Additionally, French manufacturers are reportedly willing to partner with an Indian company to achieve between 55 and 60 percent indigenous content in the production process.

As a result, the project could significantly support India’s push for greater self-reliance in defence manufacturing under the Make in India initiative.

Advanced Rafale Variants Planned

The India Rafale Tech Transfer Deal is expected to involve advanced Rafale configurations featuring F4 and future F5 standards.

These aircraft could include enhanced radar systems, artificial intelligence-enabled situational awareness capabilities, advanced electronic warfare suites, and improved networking features.

Moreover, the proposed jets are expected to integrate with existing Indian military systems and operational requirements.

Addressing Indian Air Force Squadron Requirements

The India Rafale Tech Transfer Deal comes at a time when the Indian Air Force faces a shortage of fighter squadrons.

Currently, the Air Force operates significantly below its sanctioned strength of 42 squadrons. Therefore, the acquisition of 114 new fighter aircraft is viewed as a major step toward strengthening India’s air combat capabilities.

Defence experts believe the deal would help modernize the fleet while enhancing operational readiness.

Modi’s France Visit Seen as Significant

Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to visit France from June 13 to June 18 for high-level discussions with French leadership.

Furthermore, defence cooperation is expected to be among the key topics during the visit. Observers believe the India Rafale Tech Transfer Deal could receive significant attention as both nations continue expanding their strategic partnership.

The discussions also build upon earlier Rafale acquisitions that strengthened defence ties between New Delhi and Paris.

India Rafale Tech Transfer Deal Could Boost Domestic Industry

Beyond military benefits, the proposed agreement could have substantial economic and industrial implications.

Supporters argue that local manufacturing, technology transfer, and increased indigenous content would help strengthen India’s aerospace ecosystem. Additionally, domestic production could create employment opportunities and enhance technological capabilities.

As negotiations continue, the India Rafale Tech Transfer Deal remains one of the most closely watched defence developments ahead of Prime Minister Modi’s France visit.
