New Delhi, June 14, 2026 — The Indian Army has introduced a new set of uniform and grooming regulations aimed at modernizing military standards and moving away from several colonial-era traditions.
The Indian Army New Uniform Rules include updated combat clothing categories, revised ceremonial dress provisions, and stricter grooming guidelines for personnel.
Indian Army New Uniform Rules Update Grooming Standards
Under the revised regulations, tattoos, body piercings, and certain cosmetic practices have been restricted as part of efforts to maintain uniformity and professional military appearance.
The Army has also introduced limits on moustache length, with personnel required to keep moustaches within prescribed standards. According to the updated guidelines, moustaches cannot exceed 12 centimeters in length.
Officials say the changes are intended to ensure consistency in appearance across all ranks while reflecting contemporary military standards.
Indian Army New Uniform Rules Introduce Updated Combat Clothing
The latest reforms also include changes to combat uniforms used in operational environments.
Category 7A now includes a T-shirt as part of the authorized combat uniform for operational duties. The move is expected to improve comfort and practicality for soldiers deployed in different operational conditions.
Category 7B introduces a dedicated winter combat jacket designed to provide better protection and functionality during cold-weather deployments.
The additions are part of broader efforts to adapt military clothing to modern operational requirements.
Changes to Ceremonial and Winter Uniforms
The revised regulations also affect ceremonial dress categories.
Winter ceremonial uniform 1C has now been authorized for officers. Previously, this category was reserved for Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs) and other ranks.
The change creates greater uniformity across ceremonial dress standards and expands the range of authorized attire available to officers during official events and winter functions.
Army Continues Modernization Efforts
The Indian Army New Uniform Rules are part of a wider modernization process underway across the armed forces.
Military reforms in recent years have focused on improving operational effectiveness, updating equipment, enhancing soldier welfare, and adopting contemporary standards suited to modern warfare and professional military service.
Officials believe the updated dress and grooming regulations will help maintain discipline, improve practicality, and reinforce a distinct Indian military identity.
