India’s First Hydrogen Train Set for 120 Kmph Trial on June 26

Jind, June 25: India’s first hydrogen train will undergo a high-speed trial at 120 kmph on June 26 on the Jind-Sonipat railway route in Haryana. The trial marks a major step towards introducing clean and eco-friendly rail transport in the country. A team from the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO), based in Lucknow, has reached Jind Junction to conduct the final tests before the train enters the next stage of evaluation.

High-Speed Trial Rescheduled

The high-speed trial was originally planned for June 24 but has now been rescheduled to June 26. Railway officials have already completed the low-speed trials successfully.

During the trial, experts will assess the train’s braking system, engine performance, safety features, vibration levels, speed sensors and overall track performance.

Hydrogen Train Uses Clean Energy

Unlike conventional diesel trains, India’s first hydrogen train runs on hydrogen fuel cell technology. The system combines hydrogen and oxygen to generate electricity, which powers the train’s electric motor and charges its lithium-ion battery.

The train produces only water and steam as by-products, making it a zero-emission mode of transport. It also operates with lower noise levels, offering a quieter and more comfortable journey for passengers.

Route and Performance

The hydrogen train will operate on the 90-km Jind-Sonipat railway line. It is designed to run at an average speed of 110 to 140 kmph.

According to railway officials, the train can cover 180 km using about 360 kg of hydrogen. It is expected to replace three conventional diesel-powered trains currently operating on the route.

Step Towards Green Rail Transport

The successful trial of India’s first hydrogen train will support Indian Railways’ efforts to reduce carbon emissions and adopt cleaner transport technologies.

Officials will review the trial results before taking a decision on commercial operations.
