Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has reiterated its opposition to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process and criticised the arrest of Opposition leaders during a protest in Delhi.
The party said it had opposed the SIR process even before it came to power and continues to maintain the same position. TVK said its stand on the issue remains unchanged.
The statement came after Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and other Opposition leaders and Members of Parliament were arrested during a protest in Delhi against the SIR process.
TVK condemned the arrests and described the manner in which the leaders were taken into custody as objectionable. The party said democratic protests should be handled without such an approach.
According to TVK, the arrest of Rahul Gandhi and other MPs while they were protesting against the SIR process is a matter of concern. The party called for the authorities to reconsider the manner in which such demonstrations are handled.
The SIR process has become a major political issue, with Opposition parties raising concerns about the revision of electoral rolls. The Election Commission has maintained that the exercise is aimed at ensuring accurate electoral rolls and removing ineligible entries.
TVK said its opposition to the SIR process is consistent with its earlier position. The party also called for the approach of arresting leaders during such protests to be stopped.
The latest statement adds TVK’s voice to the wider political debate surrounding electoral roll revision and the protests against the Election Commission.
