Hyderabad Introduces Unique ‘Feel the Jail’ Initiative
Residents in Hyderabad can now voluntarily spend time inside a prison-like environment under a new initiative launched at the historic Chanchalguda Central Jail.
The Telangana Prisons Department officially introduced the “Feel the Jail” programme on May 12, 2026, allowing citizens to experience prison life firsthand for either 12 or 24 hours.
The initiative has quickly attracted nationwide attention due to its unusual concept and immersive setup.
How Much Does the Experience Cost?
Authorities fixed the charges at:
- ₹2,000 for a 24-hour prison stay
- ₹1,000 for a 12-hour experience
Visitors can also explore the newly opened Chanchalguda Prison Museum.
- ₹10 entry fee for students
- ₹20 for general visitors
- Free entry for children below 10 years
Officials clarified that the collected revenue will support prisoner welfare and rehabilitation programmes.
What Participants Experience Inside
Participants entering the “Feel the Jail” programme stay inside specially designed prison barracks that closely resemble real jail accommodations.
The experience includes:
- Restricted movement
- Simple prison-style accommodation
- Standard jail meals
- Fixed routines and discipline
- Limited comforts
- No luxury facilities
The barracks contain basic essentials such as beds, water pots, wash areas and iron grill enclosures.
Authorities designed the setup to provide awareness about prison life rather than entertainment.
Chanchalguda Prison Museum Opened
The initiative was launched alongside the Chanchalguda Prison Museum, now one of India’s few prison museums.
The museum showcases:
- Colonial-era punishment devices
- Historical prison records
- Old shackles and restraint equipment
- Prison reform history
- Prison-made products
- Contributions of inmate labour to public projects
Officials said the museum highlights the transformation of Indian prisons from punishment centres to correctional institutions.
Telangana Governor Shares Emergency-Era Jail Experience
During the inauguration, Telangana Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla recalled his own imprisonment during the Emergency period.
He stated that prison life deeply changed his understanding of incarceration and prison reforms.
The Governor also spoke about introducing reforms such as fans, televisions and canteens in prisons during his tenure as prisons minister.
According to him, prisons should focus on rehabilitation and human dignity rather than punishment alone.
Telangana Prisons Department Explains Objective
Soumya Mishra said the programme aims to create awareness, empathy and discipline among citizens, especially students and young people.
Officials stressed that the initiative is not meant for entertainment but for understanding the realities of incarceration and the importance of lawful conduct.
The department also highlighted how modern prisons increasingly focus on rehabilitation, vocational training and reintegration into society.
Social Media Reactions Pour In
The “Feel the Jail” initiative sparked major discussions online. Many users described the concept as educational and innovative, while others debated whether prison experiences should become public attractions.
Despite mixed reactions, the programme has generated significant curiosity among the public.
The Chanchalguda Jail Museum and prison experience are now expected to become major awareness attractions in Hyderabad.
