India Plans Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains And Southern Bullet Train Corridor

India is expanding its railway network with the launch of Vande Bharat Sleeper trains and plans for a high-speed rail corridor connecting major southern cities. The developments aim to improve long-distance travel and reduce journey times between key cities.

The Mumbai CSMT–SMVT Bengaluru Vande Bharat Sleeper Express has reportedly started commercial services this week. The train covers around 1,118 kilometres in approximately 16 hours and offers upgraded passenger facilities.

The new sleeper service is expected to improve overnight travel between Mumbai and Bengaluru. It adds to India’s efforts to expand modern train services across important railway routes.

In another major development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reportedly approved a proposed Southern Bullet Train Corridor connecting Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Amaravati and Chennai.

According to the information provided, the proposed high-speed corridor could reduce travel time between Bengaluru and Chennai to around 73 minutes. The Bengaluru–Hyderabad journey could take approximately two hours and 10 minutes.

The proposed corridor would connect major cities across South India and could improve travel between important business and administrative centres. However, details such as the construction timeline, route alignment and project cost have not been provided in the announcement.

A Varanasi–New Delhi Vande Bharat Sleeper service has also reportedly been launched recently. India is also looking at exporting Vande Bharat trains to other countries, as its railway manufacturing capabilities continue to develop.

The latest developments have renewed discussions about railway expansion across the country. There are also calls for balanced investment so that regions across India benefit from improved railway connectivity.

The proposed Southern Bullet Train Corridor could become a major transport project for South India if it moves forward. However, its implementation will depend on further project details and official announcements.
