Tamil Nadu’s First Transgender Government Bus Driver Creates History

Pudukkottai: Tamil Nadu has created history by appointing Sridevi from Pudukkottai district as the state’s first transgender government bus driver. Working under the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC), Sridevi drives buses on the busy route between Pudukkottai New Bus Stand and Tiruchirappalli (Trichy). Her achievement marks a major step toward inclusivity and equal opportunities in public service.

Sridevi, a native of Keeranur in Pudukkottai district, completed heavy vehicle training at the Institute of Road Transport (IRT) and successfully obtained her heavy vehicle driving license. She currently operates on the crowded Trichy-Rameswaram route and has earned praise from passengers for her dedication and professionalism.

Although she initially joined as a temporary driver, passengers and local residents have urged authorities to make her appointment permanent. Many see her success as an inspiration for transgender people across the state. This is not the first time TNSTC has broken barriers. Earlier, Kaladevi from Pudukkottai became Tamil Nadu’s first transgender bus conductor. Together, these milestones highlight growing opportunities for transgender individuals in government services.

Passengers, especially women, have welcomed Sridevi’s appointment. Many have praised her confidence, determination, and contribution to public transport. Sridevi’s journey represents more than a personal achievement. It sends a strong message about equality, representation, and the importance of creating opportunities for everyone, regardless of gender identity.
