Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL) has planned a large-scale smart meter rollout across the state. Around 1.7 crore electricity meters are expected to be replaced under the project.
The project will cover households, commercial establishments and other low-tension consumers. The move is part of a wider effort to modernise the state’s electricity distribution system.
The Chennai region alone is expected to receive around 56.85 lakh smart meters. TNPDCL has divided the project into seven packages and invited tenders from service providers.
Smart meters can provide more detailed information about electricity consumption. They can also help electricity distribution companies monitor usage and improve billing systems.
The rollout is expected to create a larger digital infrastructure for electricity management across Tamil Nadu.
The project comes as electricity distribution companies across India move towards advanced metering systems. Smart meters can allow utilities to receive consumption information without relying entirely on traditional meter-reading methods.
Consumers may also benefit from better access to information about electricity usage. However, the implementation process will require careful installation and customer support.
TNPDCL is expected to finalise service providers through the tender process before the wider installation programme begins.
The project will represent one of the state’s largest electricity infrastructure modernisation programmes.
With 1.7 crore meters planned, the rollout will involve a significant logistical operation across urban and rural areas.
