Canva is restructuring its workforce, affecting 1,271 employees, or around 22 per cent of its total staff. However, the company’s exit package for departing employees has drawn attention for the support it offers during the transition.
Under the package, affected employees will receive at least six months’ salary. They will also get one year of LinkedIn Premium, career support and the option to keep their company-provided MacBooks.
Canva CEO Melanie Perkins described the restructuring as the hardest moment in the company’s 13-year history. She said the company is simplifying its structure and reorganising teams as it prepares for its next phase of growth.
The decision highlights the difficult choices companies sometimes face while changing their business structure. Workforce reductions can affect employees and their families, making support during the transition especially important.
Canva’s exit package has brought attention to how companies handle layoffs. While the job cuts affect a significant number of employees, the financial and career support offered by the company has also become a major talking point.
The development raises an important question for business leaders: how should companies support employees when restructuring becomes necessary? Difficult decisions may sometimes be unavoidable, but the way employees are treated during such changes also matters.
