Trump-Xi Summit: AI Race, Trade and Taiwan Talks

The Trump-Xi summit comes as the United States and China seek to manage differences over artificial intelligence, trade, Taiwan and rare earths. US President Donald Trump is expected to welcome Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington for talks aimed at managing relations between the world’s two largest economies.

The meeting is expected to include ceremonial events and discussions on several major economic and strategic issues. While both sides have sought to keep tensions under control, disagreements remain over technology, tariffs, semiconductor exports and Taiwan.

Trump-Xi Summit Comes Amid US-China Tensions

The Trump-Xi summit is taking place against the backdrop of continuing disagreements between Washington and Beijing. Trade remains one of the central issues, with both countries seeking to protect their economic interests.

US and Chinese officials have held preliminary discussions ahead of the leaders’ meeting. However, major differences remain over tariffs, rare-earth exports and access to advanced technologies.

The two governments have also sought to maintain communication as they manage wider tensions in their economic relationship.

AI Race Becomes Key Issue for US and China

The AI race between the US and China has become an increasingly important part of the broader relationship. Both countries view artificial intelligence as important for future economic and technological development.

Advanced semiconductors and AI-related technologies are major areas of disagreement. US restrictions on advanced chips and chipmaking equipment have affected China’s access to some technologies.

US officials have also raised concerns about Chinese companies using AI model distillation to develop competing systems. Chinese officials have rejected such accusations.

The two countries have discussed establishing dialogue on artificial intelligence. However, the scope of that cooperation and its potential results remain uncertain.

Taiwan, Rare Earths and Trade Also on Agenda

Taiwan is another sensitive issue likely to remain part of discussions surrounding the Trump-Xi summit. Beijing opposes US arms sales to Taiwan, while Washington continues its longstanding policy toward the island.

Rare-earth supplies are also important because China plays a major role in the global supply chain for rare-earth materials and magnets. Trade restrictions and export controls have therefore become an important part of US-China economic discussions.

The future of the tariff truce will also be closely watched. The summit could provide an opportunity for both sides to discuss ways to manage disagreements while keeping communication open.

The Trump-Xi summit therefore comes at a time when the two countries are balancing cooperation with competition across technology, trade and regional security.
