The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has issued a fresh summons to Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee in connection with the alleged teachers’ recruitment scam in West Bengal.
ED officials visited Banerjee’s residence on Wednesday and directed him to appear before the agency on June 15 for questioning in a money laundering investigation linked to the case.
Probe Linked to 2016 Recruitment Scam
The investigation focuses on alleged irregularities in the 2016 primary teachers’ recruitment process in West Bengal.
According to investigators, the case involves accusations of cash-for-jobs and illegal appointments linked to nearly 20,000 teaching positions.
The Calcutta High Court earlier ordered a CBI investigation into the recruitment process after allegations of large-scale malpractice surfaced.
ED Investigating Money Laundering Angle
The Enforcement Directorate is examining whether proceeds generated from the alleged scam were laundered through various channels.
Officials believe financial transactions connected to the recruitment process may have violated anti-money laundering laws.
Furthermore, the agency has questioned several political leaders, officials and middlemen as part of the ongoing investigation.
Abhishek Banerjee to Appear Before Agency
Abhishek Banerjee, who serves as the national general secretary of the All India Trinamool Congress and represents Diamond Harbour in Parliament, has previously faced ED questioning in multiple cases.
Sources close to the party indicated that Banerjee plans to cooperate with the investigation and appear before the agency as directed.
Political Reactions Intensify
The latest summons has triggered political reactions in West Bengal ahead of the 2026 elections.
The BJP accused the ruling TMC of corruption and demanded accountability in the recruitment scam.
Meanwhile, TMC leaders alleged that central agencies are being used for political targeting and pressure.
Case Remains Politically Sensitive
The teachers’ recruitment scam continues to remain one of the most politically sensitive issues in West Bengal.
The case has already resulted in arrests, court proceedings and multiple investigations involving senior officials and political figures.
As the ED probe continues, the fresh summons to Abhishek Banerjee is expected to further intensify the political battle in the state.
