The Jaipur Internet Shutdown has drawn attention across Rajasthan after authorities suspended mobile internet services during a major road-widening and demolition operation in Jagatpura.
Officials imposed the restrictions from midnight on June 7 to midnight on June 8 while carrying out the large-scale drive under tight security arrangements.
Jaipur Internet Shutdown Linked to Demolition Operation
Authorities suspended 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G mobile internet services along with bulk SMS facilities and access to several social media platforms.
The restrictions accompanied a road-widening project on a 1.5-kilometre stretch in Jagatpura. Officials said the operation aimed to remove encroachments and expand the road from approximately 25-30 feet to nearly 80 feet.
The project targets structures that allegedly obstruct traffic movement along a route running parallel to a railway line.
Heavy Security Deployed
Authorities deployed nearly 3,000 police personnel to maintain law and order during the operation.
Officials also disconnected electricity supply in parts of the affected area to limit alternative internet access through WiFi networks.
According to police officers overseeing the operation, the demolition drive began peacefully with cooperation from residents and local stakeholders.
Supporters Cite Public Safety
Government officials argued that temporary communication restrictions helped prevent misinformation and ensured public safety during a sensitive operation.
They stated that the road expansion project would improve traffic flow, connectivity and urban infrastructure in the rapidly growing area.
Officials maintained that the measures were precautionary and limited to the duration of the operation.
Critics Raise Transparency Concerns
Critics questioned the need for a complete internet shutdown during a civic project.
Civil rights groups and opposition voices argued that communication restrictions reduce transparency and limit public access to real-time information.
The debate has renewed broader discussions about the use of internet shutdowns during administrative and law-and-order operations in India.
