Kerala to Get Up to 300 MW of Power From NTPC Project

Kerala is set to receive additional electricity from an NTPC project as the state continues to deal with a shortage of power during peak demand periods.

Chief Minister V D Satheesan said Kerala would get up to 300 MW of power from the NTPC project at a cost of ₹5.18 per unit.

The Chief Minister announced the development after discussions with NTPC Chairman Gurdeep Singh in Delhi.

The additional power is expected to provide some relief to Kerala as electricity demand has increased sharply in recent months.

The state has been depending on power purchases from outside Kerala to meet its growing requirements. At the same time, the availability of cheaper power has remained a concern.

KSEB has been facing pressure during peak evening hours when electricity consumption rises significantly.

Officials have also been working on long-term arrangements to improve the state’s power availability. A separate agreement could provide Kerala with additional power from a thermal project in Maharashtra.

According to KSEB officials, the state could eventually receive around 540 MW from two units of the Sinnar plant, although the Chief Minister’s latest announcement referred to 300 MW.

The additional supply is expected to reduce pressure on Kerala’s power system and help meet rising demand.

The development comes as Kerala looks for ways to strengthen its electricity supply while also expanding renewable and long-term power procurement options.
