India’s Unified Payments Interface has reached a new scale. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman made the announcement on Sunday, October 25, 2026. UPI 80 crore daily transactions is now the reality, she said. That adds up to more than 2,400 crore a month. As a result, UPI is the world’s largest real-time payment system.
Sitharaman spoke at the opening of the RBI’s Greenfield Data Centre in Khordha, Odisha. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the facility.
She also noted that UPI’s annual volume has grown about 13,000 times since 2016-17. Because of this growth, a lively fintech sector has emerged. In turn, it brings credit, insurance and investment products to millions of first-time users.
The rise has been fast. For example, daily transactions crossed 700 million for the first time in August 2025, touching 707 million. Meanwhile, the government aims for 100 crore transactions a day.
Sitharaman called data centres the “vaults of the digital age”. She added that the government has taken several steps to strengthen the sector. Therefore, the new RBI facility should support digital payments as they become part of everyday life.
