Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has ordered the implementation of the Vetri Laptop Scheme for college students, with an allocation of ₹2,000 crore. The scheme aims to provide free laptops to students studying in government colleges across the state.
The scheme will cover first-year and second-year undergraduate and diploma students from various fields, including arts, engineering and medicine. Third-year and fourth-year students in professional courses who missed out on the benefit last year will also be eligible.
According to the details shared, engineering students will receive laptops with Intel Core i5-level specifications. The scheme is expected to help students access digital learning resources and improve their technical skills.
A steering committee led by Chief Minister Vijay will oversee the implementation. The Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT) will handle the rollout of the scheme.
The government plans to use university records to identify eligible students and distribute laptops. Students will not need to submit separate applications to receive the devices.
The initiative is aimed at supporting students from modest financial backgrounds by improving access to technology. The government expects the scheme to support higher education, learning and future job opportunities.
