Karnataka HIV Cases Rise Among Young Men, Health Experts Raise Alarm

By South Matters Health Desk | Health

Karnataka HIV Cases have increased significantly over the past two years, raising concerns among health officials and experts.

Data from health authorities shows that active HIV cases in Karnataka rose from 44,581 in 2023-24 to 66,606 in 2025-26. The increase is especially noticeable among young men aged 18 to 35 years.

Sharp Rise Among Young Adults

Health officials reported a major increase in HIV cases linked to male-to-male sexual contact.

Among people aged 18 to 25 years, cases increased from 3,732 to 6,283. The 26 to 35 age group recorded 14,555 cases last year, making it one of the most affected categories.

Experts say several factors contribute to the rise. These include inconsistent condom use, growing use of dating applications, and limited awareness about sexually transmitted infections.

Health Experts Stress Prevention

Doctors and public health experts continue to encourage regular testing and safe sexual practices.

They warn that untreated sexually transmitted infections can increase the risk of HIV transmission. Experts also point to concerns over antibiotic-resistant infections, including gonorrhea.

As a result, health authorities have increased efforts to improve awareness among young people.

KSAPS Expands Awareness Programs

The Karnataka State AIDS Prevention Society has launched several initiatives to address the situation.

These efforts include:

  • Red Ribbon Clubs in colleges
  • HIV awareness campaigns
  • Workplace testing camps
  • 1097 HIV helpline services
  • BreakFree mobile application for risk assessment

Officials believe these programs can improve awareness and encourage early testing.

Importance of Early Testing

Health leaders stress that stigma remains one of the biggest challenges.

They encourage people to seek testing without fear and to access treatment at an early stage if required.

Experts say awareness, education, and responsible behavior remain the most effective tools to reduce new infections and protect public health.
