Karnataka Monsoon Weakens: Light Rain Likely Till June 21, Farmers Concerned Over Rainfall Deficits

BENGALURU: Karnataka’s southwest monsoon has weakened significantly, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting only light to moderate rainfall in several parts of the state until June 21. The subdued monsoon activity has raised concerns among farmers, water resource officials, and residents, especially as temperatures remain higher than normal in many districts.

According to weather forecasts, coastal and interior Karnataka are expected to receive scattered light rainfall over the coming days, while widespread heavy rainfall is unlikely before the last week of June. Experts say the current slowdown in monsoon activity is linked to changing weather patterns and the growing influence of El Niño conditions.

El Niño Adds to Karnataka’s Weather Concerns
The IMD has indicated that moderate to strong El Niño conditions are likely during the 2026 monsoon season. Historically, El Niño has been associated with weaker monsoon rainfall across India, including Karnataka. Weather experts warn that below-normal rainfall could impact agriculture, reservoir storage, and groundwater recharge if the situation continues for an extended period.

Farmers Worry About Crop Sowing
The weak monsoon has become a major concern for Karnataka’s farming community. Large parts of North Interior Karnataka depend heavily on seasonal rainfall for crop cultivation. Delayed or uneven rainfall can affect sowing activities for crops such as maize, pulses, millets, paddy, and oilseeds.

Agricultural experts have advised farmers to closely monitor weather updates and adopt water conservation measures until rainfall improves.

Bengaluru and Other Cities Feel the Impact
Bengaluru and several other urban centres are also closely watching monsoon developments. Lower-than-expected rainfall could affect groundwater levels and increase pressure on existing water resources later in the year. Experts warn that if rainfall remains below normal, cities dependent on reservoirs and groundwater could face challenges during the next summer season.

When Will the Monsoon Improve?
Weather officials expect the monsoon to regain strength during the last week of June. While some districts received brief spells of rain earlier this month, current forecasts suggest that widespread rainfall activity may remain limited for a few more days.

For now, Karnataka remains under a weak monsoon phase, with farmers and residents hoping for stronger rainfall in the coming weeks. The performance of the monsoon over the next month will be crucial for agriculture, water availability, and the state’s overall economy.
