New Delhi, June 15, 2026 — Noida International Airport marked a major milestone on Monday as it welcomed its first commercial flights. The launch also created an emotional moment for local communities. Farmers who gave land for the project became some of the airport’s first passengers.
IndiGo flight 6E-2278 landed at the airport and received a traditional water cannon salute. Soon after, the airport handled its first commercial departure to Lucknow.
Meanwhile, Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu flagged off the inaugural flight. The event attracted officials, airport staff, and residents from the Jewar region.
Farmers Become First Flyers
Around 172 farmers and villagers joined the historic journey. Many of them had contributed land for the airport’s development. For several passengers, the trip marked their first experience on an aircraft.
Moreover, families gathered at the airport to celebrate the occasion. Many passengers proudly carried their boarding passes and posed for photographs before departure.
A young girl dressed as a pilot also became one of the highlights of the event. Her presence added excitement to the celebrations.
A Journey Beyond Aviation
The story behind the flight carries deep significance. Years ago, local families gave up farmland to make way for the airport project. At the time, many hoped the development would bring jobs, better connectivity, and economic growth.
Today, those hopes are beginning to take shape. The same land that once supported farming now serves as a gateway for air travel.
Several villagers became emotional while reflecting on the transformation. Some had spent decades cultivating crops in the area. However, they never imagined they would one day fly from the same location.
A Major Boost for Uttar Pradesh
The Noida International Airport project represents an investment of nearly ₹11,000 crore in its first phase.
Initially, the airport aims to handle up to 12 million passengers every year. In addition, officials expect the project to attract investment and create thousands of jobs across western Uttar Pradesh.
The airport will also improve connectivity between the National Capital Region and several domestic destinations. As a result, businesses and travelers could benefit from faster and more efficient transportation.
A Historic Moment for Jewar
The first commercial flight carried more than passengers. It carried the memories, sacrifices, and aspirations of an entire community.
Furthermore, the event highlighted how infrastructure projects can transform local regions. For the people of Jewar, the airport is not just a transportation hub. It is also a symbol of change and opportunity.
As commercial operations begin, Noida International Airport enters a new chapter. At the same time, the farmers who helped make the project possible have secured a unique place in its history.
