Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate and dedicate five major development projects worth around ₹3,350 crore in Ladakh on October 15, 2026. The projects will focus on airport infrastructure, strategic road connectivity, hydropower, cultural heritage conservation and water security. According to the Press Information Bureau (PIB), the Prime Minister will attend the programme through video conferencing at around 12:30 PM and address the gathering. These projects aim to improve daily life for residents, strengthen infrastructure in the Himalayan region and support the operational needs of the armed forces.
One of the major projects is the new passenger terminal building at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh. Built at a cost of ₹640 crore, the terminal covers 23,800 square metres and can handle around 35 lakh passengers annually. The building combines modern passenger facilities with elements of Ladakh’s cultural heritage. It also uses geothermal energy to improve energy efficiency and reduce its carbon footprint. The new terminal is expected to improve passenger convenience and strengthen air connectivity between Ladakh and other parts of India.
Another important project is the 298-kilometre Nimmu-Padum-Darcha Road, built by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO). The road connects Nimmu in Leh with Darcha in Himachal Pradesh through the Zanskar Valley. It will provide an alternative route to Ladakh alongside the existing Srinagar–Leh and Manali–Leh highways. The road crosses difficult Himalayan terrain, including the high-altitude Shinkun La Pass. It is expected to improve the movement of armed forces and supplies while helping residents access healthcare, education, markets and essential services.
The Prime Minister will also inaugurate the 9 MW Hanu Small Hydroelectric Project and the 66 kV Double-Circuit Dah-Hanu-Khaltsi Transmission Line. These projects aim to improve electricity supply and strengthen the region’s power infrastructure. They will also support the use of Ladakh’s hydropower resources and improve the reliability of its electricity network.
The development programme will also focus on preserving Ladakh’s ancient history. Modi will inaugurate India’s first Petroglyph Conservation Park at Sindhu Ghat in Leh. Ladakh contains hundreds of prehistoric rock art sites featuring carvings of animals, human figures and symbolic images. These carvings provide valuable information about the region’s ancient communities and cultural history. The conservation park will help protect these archaeological remains, raise public awareness and encourage responsible heritage tourism.
Water conservation is another key part of the initiative. The Prime Minister will inaugurate 40 water bodies developed across 40 villages under Project Him Sarovar. The initiative aims to address water shortages caused by Ladakh’s climate and seasonal changes in water availability. Although snowmelt and glacial runoff provide water during certain periods, farmers often face shortages during the sowing season. The project seeks to store water when it is available and make it accessible when required. This could support irrigation, protect agricultural livelihoods and improve long-term water security.
Together, the five projects represent a major infrastructure and development push in Ladakh. They cover essential areas such as transport, defence logistics, electricity, heritage protection and water management. Their long-term impact will depend on effective implementation, maintenance and access for local communities. The projects are expected to strengthen connectivity, support economic activity and address some of the region’s key geographical and environmental challenges.
