New Delhi, June 17: Messaging platform Telegram has been removed from the Google Play Store in India following a government directive aimed at preventing the spread of leaked exam material and misinformation ahead of the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination. Apple is also expected to take similar action in compliance with the order.
The move comes after authorities alleged that Telegram was being used by cheating networks to circulate false claims and leaked examination content related to the NEET medical entrance examination. The government has temporarily restricted access to the platform as part of a broader effort to protect the integrity of the re-examination scheduled for June 21.
Why Was Telegram Removed?
According to reports, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) directed Google and Apple to temporarily delist Telegram from their app stores in India. Officials said the decision was taken to stop the misuse of the platform for exam-related fraud and misinformation.
Users attempting to download Telegram from the Google Play Store are now seeing messages indicating that the app is unavailable.
Temporary Ban Linked to NEET Controversy
The action follows allegations that organized groups used Telegram channels and features to spread misleading information and claims about leaked question papers ahead of the NEET re-exam. The original NEET examination had already faced controversy over alleged paper leaks, affecting millions of students across India.
Government agencies believe temporary restrictions on Telegram could help prevent further misuse of digital platforms during the examination period.
Telegram Challenges Government Order
Telegram has challenged the government’s decision in the Delhi High Court. The company argues that the restriction impacts millions of ordinary users who rely on the platform for communication, education, and business purposes. Telegram founder Pavel Durov has also criticized the move, saying it punishes legitimate users rather than addressing the source of the leaks.
What Happens Next?
The current restrictions are described as temporary, with authorities indicating that the measures are intended to remain in place during the sensitive examination period. The outcome of Telegram’s legal challenge and future government decisions will determine when normal access is restored.
