India delivered a remarkable performance at the inaugural World Yogasana Championships, finishing at the top of the medal table with an impressive haul of 114 medals.
The five-day championship took place at EKA Arena in Ahmedabad and attracted 522 athletes from 79 countries. Competitors showcased their skills in artistic, rhythmic, and traditional yogasana events across six age categories.
India Dominates Medal Standings
The Indian contingent entered the competition with 122 athletes and dominated throughout the tournament.
India secured 114 medals, finishing far ahead of other participating nations. Meanwhile, Japan claimed 11 medals, while Argentina secured five.
In total, athletes from 31 countries won medals during the championship.
Global Participation Marks Historic Event
The event marked a major milestone for Yogasana as a competitive sport.
Athletes from Asia, Europe, Africa, North America, South America, and Oceania participated in the championship. As a result, the competition highlighted yoga’s growing international appeal.
Organizers described the event as one of the largest gatherings dedicated to competitive Yogasana.
Leaders Praise India’s Success
Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya praised the athletes and credited the growth of yoga to the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Meanwhile, yoga guru Baba Ramdev called the championship the beginning of a global movement that combines yoga’s traditional roots with modern sporting competition.
Yogasana’s Global Future Looks Bright
The success of the inaugural championship has strengthened calls for greater international recognition of Yogasana.
Supporters believe future editions will attract even more countries and athletes. Furthermore, many advocates hope the sport will eventually feature in major international multi-sport events.
