Senior Congress leader D. K. Shivakumar took oath as the Chief Minister of Karnataka on Wednesday, marking a major political transition in the state.
The swearing-in ceremony took place at Lok Bhavan in Bengaluru. Shivakumar assumed office after the resignation of Siddaramaiah, who stepped down following a leadership transition agreed upon within the Congress party.
Historic Moment for Shivakumar
An eight-time legislator, Shivakumar has been one of the Congress party’s most influential leaders in Karnataka.
Over the years, he played a key role in managing elections, strengthening the party organization and handling political challenges.
His elevation to the state’s top post marks the culmination of a long political journey.
G. Parameshwara Becomes Deputy Chief Minister
Alongside Shivakumar, G. Parameshwara took oath as Deputy Chief Minister.
The new government also inducted 13 ministers in the first phase of cabinet formation.
Party leaders said the cabinet reflects a balance of regional, social and community representation.
Congress Focuses on Stability
The leadership transition follows months of speculation over Karnataka’s power-sharing arrangement.
Congress leaders have emphasized that the change was carried out smoothly to maintain party unity and ensure political stability ahead of future elections.
Furthermore, the new administration is expected to continue several welfare and development initiatives launched by the previous government.
National Leaders Extend Greetings
Several political leaders congratulated Shivakumar following the ceremony.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his wishes, while senior Congress leaders welcomed the new Chief Minister and expressed confidence in his leadership.
Shivakumar also met former chief ministers and party veterans after taking office.
Challenges Ahead
The new Chief Minister now faces the task of managing Karnataka’s finances, implementing election promises and maintaining coalition and party unity.
Additionally, the government will focus on infrastructure, investment, welfare programs and employment generation.
Political observers believe Shivakumar’s leadership style and administrative decisions will shape Karnataka’s political landscape in the coming years.
With the oath-taking complete, attention now shifts to the new government’s priorities and its roadmap for the state.
