TVK Backs Congress for Rajya Sabha Seat in Tamil Nadu

By South Matters Political Desk | Tamil Nadu Politics

Tamil Nadu’s ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, has decided to support its ally, the Indian National Congress, for the upcoming Rajya Sabha by-election in the state.

The seat became vacant after C. Ve. Shanmugam won a seat in the Tamil Nadu Assembly and resigned from the Upper House.

Alliance Unity Takes Priority

The decision comes just weeks after the TVK-led alliance secured victory in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

Although TVK emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats, the party relied on support from alliance partners, including Congress, to form the government.

By backing Congress for the Rajya Sabha seat, TVK has signaled its intention to maintain strong relations within the ruling coalition.

Congress Likely to Nominate Praveen Chakravarthy

Political sources indicate that Congress is considering Praveen Chakravarthy as its candidate for the June 18 Rajya Sabha by-election.

The final decision is expected after consultations within the party leadership.

If nominated, Chakravarthy would become the alliance-backed candidate with strong chances of securing victory.

Strategic Move by Vijay

Political observers view the move as a strategic decision by Chief Minister Vijay.

Rather than fielding a TVK candidate, the party has chosen to strengthen coalition ties by accommodating an ally.

Furthermore, the decision may help ensure smoother coordination between alliance partners on legislative and governance matters.

Mixed Reactions Among Supporters

The announcement has drawn mixed reactions from political circles.

Congress leaders welcomed the decision and described it as a sign of trust within the alliance.

However, some TVK supporters expressed disappointment, arguing that a party loyalist could have been nominated for the Upper House seat.

Despite these reactions, party leaders maintain that alliance unity remains a priority.

Focus on Long-Term Stability

The Rajya Sabha decision highlights TVK’s approach to coalition management after its historic rise to power.

As the ruling alliance begins its first term in office, maintaining strong partnerships is expected to play a key role in ensuring political stability.

The June 18 by-election will now be closely watched as another test of the alliance’s cohesion and strength.
