Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay chaired his first cabinet meeting on Friday at the State Secretariat in Chennai, marking a key milestone for the newly formed government.

The meeting comes nearly a month after Vijay assumed office on May 10 following the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. His party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, emerged as the largest force in the elections and subsequently formed a coalition government with support from Congress, VCK, IUML, CPI and CPI(M).

Key Issues Discussed

The cabinet reportedly reviewed several important governance priorities, including:

  • TASMAC reforms
  • Investment promotion initiatives
  • State budget preparations
  • Law and order situation
  • Implementation of election promises
  • Welfare and social development schemes

Officials indicated that discussions focused on accelerating governance and fulfilling commitments made during the election campaign.

Focus on Governance and Development

The Vijay-led government has emphasized economic growth, employment generation and administrative reforms since assuming office.

Sources indicated that investment attraction and industrial expansion featured prominently in discussions as the government seeks to position Tamil Nadu as a leading destination for business and technology investments.

The cabinet also reviewed welfare commitments announced during the election campaign and explored implementation timelines.

Expanded Cabinet in Place

The current ministry consists of 33 members, with Vijay retaining several important portfolios, including home, police, public administration and urban development.

An official statement detailing decisions taken during the meeting is expected to be released by the government.

The cabinet meeting is being viewed as an important step in setting the policy direction of the new administration as it prepares for its first full budget and governance roadmap.
