Supreme Court Directs Tamil Nadu to Surrender 151 Vacant Medical Super-Speciality Seats for All-India Counselling

CHENNAI: In a significant ruling affecting medical admissions, the Supreme Court has directed the Tamil Nadu government to report 151 vacant super-speciality medical seats to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) so that they can be filled through the All-India Merit List.

The order is expected to benefit medical aspirants across the country by ensuring that vacant seats do not remain unfilled and are allotted based on merit.

What Did the Supreme Court Say?

The Supreme Court instructed Tamil Nadu authorities to surrender the 151 unfilled super-speciality seats to the DGHS for centralized counselling under the All-India quota system.

The court disposed of the matter after noting the agreement among the parties involved and referring to an earlier judgment related to the allocation of super-speciality medical seats.

Why Are These Seats Important?

Super-speciality medical courses are among the most sought-after postgraduate medical programmes in India. Seats in disciplines such as cardiology, neurology, nephrology, oncology, and other advanced medical fields are limited and highly competitive.

The transfer of 151 vacant seats to the All-India counselling pool could provide opportunities for eligible candidates who narrowly missed admission during earlier rounds of counselling.

Tamil Nadu’s Position

Tamil Nadu was permitted to continue filling certain reserved seats under a 2020 Government Order, which provides reservation benefits in super-speciality medical admissions.

However, the vacant seats identified during the counselling process will now be reported to the DGHS and allotted through the national merit-based system.

Boost for Medical Aspirants

Medical education experts believe the decision will help maximize seat utilization and ensure that valuable medical training positions are not wasted.

The move is expected to benefit deserving candidates from across India while also strengthening the healthcare workforce by filling vacant super-speciality seats.

Impact on NEET SS Counselling

The Supreme Court’s direction could influence the ongoing NEET Super Speciality (NEET SS) admission process, as the surrendered seats will now become available through centralized counselling conducted by national authorities.

Candidates participating in NEET SS counselling are advised to closely monitor updates from the Directorate General of Health Services and the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) regarding seat availability and subsequent counselling rounds.

With medical admissions becoming increasingly competitive every year, the allocation of these 151 seats could prove crucial for hundreds of aspiring specialists seeking advanced medical training.
