Visakhapatnam, June 18: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted widespread rainfall across Andhra Pradesh over the next five days due to a trough extending from Eastern Vidarbha across the state.
Officials said weather conditions over the Bay of Bengal have become rough, increasing the chances of moderate to heavy rainfall in several districts.
Fishermen Asked Not to Venture Into the Sea
The IMD has advised fishermen along the North Coastal Andhra coast not to venture into the sea for the next five days. Strong winds and rough sea conditions are expected during this period, making fishing activities risky. Authorities have urged fishermen to follow official weather advisories and safety instructions.
Vizianagaram Records Highest Rainfall
According to weather officials, Vepada in Vizianagaram district recorded the highest rainfall in Andhra Pradesh during the last 24 hours. The area received around 9 cm of rainfall, while several other districts also reported showers.
El Niño Threat Looms Over Kharif Season
Meanwhile, the Central Ministry of Agriculture has warned that the impact of El Niño could affect the upcoming Kharif season in 12 states, including Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. El Niño often leads to weaker monsoon rainfall and can affect agricultural production.
Centre Reviews Kharif Preparedness
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan recently reviewed preparations for the Kharif 2026 season. He directed officials to coordinate with district collectors, agriculture departments, Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), and other agencies in vulnerable districts.
The Centre has asked states to remain alert and prepare for possible rainfall shortages.
Emergency Plans for 326 Districts
Officials said contingency plans are being prepared for 326 districts across the 12 states that may face El Niño-related challenges. In areas that receive less rainfall, authorities plan to promote alternative crops such as cotton and pulses.
The government hopes these measures will help farmers reduce losses and maintain agricultural production despite uncertain weather conditions.
With heavy rains expected in the coming days and concerns over the Kharif season growing, authorities are closely monitoring weather developments across Andhra Pradesh.
