India is observing National Engineers’ Day 2026 on September 15 to mark the birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna awardee Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, one of India’s most respected engineers and statesmen. Born on September 15, 1861, in Muddenahalli village in present-day Karnataka, Visvesvaraya is remembered for his contribution to engineering, irrigation and infrastructure development.
On National Engineers’ Day, leaders across the country paid tribute to Visvesvaraya and highlighted his contribution to India’s development. Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar were among those who remembered his work, discipline and dedication.
Visvesvaraya played an important role in several major engineering projects, including the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam in Karnataka. His work in water management and irrigation helped improve agricultural development and showed how engineering could be used to address large public needs.
Political parties, including the Congress and BJP, also paid tribute to Visvesvaraya and recognised his contribution to the country. He is widely remembered as the Father of Engineering in India, while his life continues to inspire generations of engineers and students.
