Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Tuesday announced ₹10 lakh financial assistance for the families of three workers from the state who died in a gas plant explosion in Qatar. The relief will come from the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund (CMPRF).
Three Tamil Nadu Workers Killed
The victims were Pabit (26) from Tirunelveli district, Sajith Kumar (25) from Panagudi, and Suvin (26) from Mangammal Salai.They were among the workers who died in the explosion and fire at the Barzan gas production facility in Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City.
Reports said 13 workers lost their lives in the accident. Twelve of them were Indian nationals. Another 66 workers suffered injuries and are receiving treatment.
Explosion During Plant Restart Work
The accident occurred during preparations to restart the gas plant. The facility had remained closed for several months. The explosion triggered a major fire that spread quickly through parts of the plant. Qatari authorities have started an investigation into the incident.
Tamil Nadu Government Extends Support
Chief Minister Vijay expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. He assured them that the Tamil Nadu government would provide all necessary support during this difficult time. Officials are coordinating with the Union Government and Indian authorities in Qatar to bring the bodies back to India.
Embassy Assisting Families
The Indian Embassy in Qatar has contacted local authorities and is helping with repatriation procedures. Family members have requested the early return of the mortal remains.
The tragedy has highlighted the risks faced by Indian workers employed overseas. It has also renewed calls for stronger workplace safety measures at industrial facilities.
